John DePetro's Rhode Thoughts |The Missing Linc

What do you call layoffs for 1000 state workers? A good start. Governor “double up” Chafee drops the gauntlet and threatens layoffs as the 2012 “mystery budget” inches closer to the surface at the State House. The gang on Smith Hill seems far more interested in getting invited to the next Dean Esserman “beer bash” than involving Linc in their budget discussions. And why should they care? Governor “36%” Chafee has stumbled out of the gate in record fashion with 5 months down and only 43 months left to go.

Chafee tries to throw the power of his office around (just ask the 9 people who went to see him speak in Johnston). At the Johnston Senior center, Chafee announced that nobody came to hear him speak because” everyone agrees with me”, ( like the old Jimmy Buffet song “If the phone doesn’t ring, it’s me”).  The Governor sounds like he is still campaigning, as he continues to remind us how much experience he has. Governor Chafee throws around his time as “Mayor of Warwick” like Anthony Weiner flashing his congressional badge at a swinger’s convention.  Chafee was Mayor of Warwick during the 90’s, when the biggest decision was how many clam cakes to order at Rocky Point. Times have changed in Rhode Island, where the two most exciting guys are Bob Watson and the police chief of Providence.  Rhode Island has some of the highest unemployment in the country, a climate that is unfriendly to business, and all the signs of cities in crisis.

So what has been decided about Rhode Island in the budget going forward? Don’t ask Governor “Gump” since he seems as in the dark as the Rhode Island highways (lights turned off to save money). Will they raise our taxes? Will there be a tax placed on anything or anyone that moves (or cuts hair)?  Where is the leadership? What will happen with the pensions? What will happen with Providence? Governor Chafee stands silent as the unions make a land grab on 35 acres of land in Providence with no laws that apply. Rhode Island is a state in crisis, yet our leader seems he is along for the ride like the rest of us.

VERY funny, friend. Like the Weiner comment. It seems like people don't like negativity?... what-- it's funny! If you don't LAUGH at this crap, you'll CRY. Keep up the "negativity" please, you're making my side split

John,
Great article. Everything you said about the governor was accurate. He is either unable or unwilling to see the complete crisis this state is in. Keep up the good work.

Don't quit the day job John. Comedy is not your forte. But more importantly, how long do we have to listen to WPRO personalities bash people like the Gov and Col Esserman? There can't even be as many people as attended the Gov's function in Johnston who give a damn. Find something new to talk about, maybe even try being a little positive once in awhile!
