The head of the Rhode Island Republican Party says the GOP's victory in a New York congressional district held by the Democrats since 1921 is a big morale boost for Republicans here.
"The same thing could very well happen here in Rhode Island", Rhode Island GOP Chairman Ken McKay tells WPRO News. He said the victory is a warning signal to the congressional delegation here in addition to a morale builder for the often beleaguered state party.
"It's one thing to feel like you're right on the facts and it's another thing to see the practical application", said McKay.
Republican Bob Turner defeated Democrat David Weprin in a race to replace the departed Anthony Weiner, who was taken out by a online sex scandal.
His seat, representing parts of Brookyln and Queens, had been held by the Democrats since 1921 and filled by such high profile Democrats as Chuck Schumer and Geraldine Ferraro. Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans there 3 to 1.
