Representative Stephen Ucci of Johnston will lead a special House commission to investigate ways to end the odor emanating from the state’s landfill.

The Special House Commission on Rhode Island Resource Recovery will investigate the cause of the odor and examine how other landfills have dealt with similar issues.

“Many of my constituents feel that they want to be more involved in the process and understand and the quality of life for the citizens is really affected by this,” said Ucci.

The committee is set to meet on December 16th at 6:30 p.m. at Johnston high school. Rhode Island Resource Recovery and the Department of Environmental Management have been invited to make presentations to the committee.

Ucci said that he is hoping to discover the scope of the problem and begin to help Resource Recovery work toward a solution. “Our hope is to get this out and then continue hearings in January once we go back to help them arrive at a solutions and see what other resources we can employ to get this fixed,” said Ucci.

Michael O’Connell Executive Director of RI Resource Recovery said the rotten-egg odor people smell around the state is a result of increase sulfur emissions into the air because excessive amounts of rain have blocked ducts that usually filter out the smell.

O’Connell said that resource recovery is taking steps to correct the problem and hopes for the matter to be resolved soon. Ucci said the leadership at the landfill has been more than accommodating to his requests for information.

Along with Rep. Ucci,  Rep. Deborah A. Fellela, Rep. Thomas Winfield, Rep. Michael W. Chippendale and Rep. Michael J. Marcello will sit on the committee.
