Warwick police arrested an allegedly unruly teenager who went on a violent rampage in a city parking lot. Authorities said they were able to overpower the 17-year-old after he tripped and fell. He was reportedly wielding a baseball bat and throwing rocks at officers.
The incident happened Thursday afternoon in a parking lot at 1256 Warwick Avenue, near the John Brown Francis Elementary School. The school was placed in lockdown mode as a precaution. Police said that an officer was hit with a baseball bat during the incident, and that the teen also threatened the police with an AK-47 assault rifle. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital where he was treated for psychological care.
Warwick police commended the officers involved, saying they demonstrated exemplary restraint, extreme calm, and risk of harm in their efforts to avert a potentially tragic lethal outcome.
