Congressman David Cicilline and businessman Anthony Gemma are neck and neck in the November Democratic primary for Congressional District 1 reveals a new WPRI-TV poll.
The poll, which surveyed 302 likely Democratic primary voters in the 1st Congressional District, put Cicilline at 40% with Gemma right behind at 36%, 20% remained undecided. In the 2010 primary Cicilline won in a four way race with 37% of the vote to Gemmas 23%.
According to the poll the primary will likely come down to the senior citizen vote which is relatively divided. Cicillinie is more popular with voters under 39 holding a 36 point lead over Gemma but Gemma holds a 7 point lead over Cicilline with voters between 40 and 50. Cicilline is slightly more popular with union members enjoying 38% support compared to Gemmas 33%. The poll conducted by Fleming and Associates has a margin of error of 5.7%
The winner of the Democratic primary will face Republican Brendan Doherty, who does not face a primary.
