A bag of heroin worth about $2,000 was seized after Rhode Island Department of Corrections Special Investigations Unit found out an inmate had found it while on litter duty. On May 15, the minimum security inmate was bragging about the find to fellow inmates at the ACI offering to sell it to them.
The following Wednesday crews went back to the site the crew had been cleaning along Route 10 but were unable to find the heroin because of bad weather. They returned Thursday and sent a K-6, Robbie, to sniff out the drug. He hit on it within minutes, says Investigator Joe Forgue.
Our test kit told us right away it was heroin, says Forgue. Since no one had it in their actual possession, there were no criminal charges, said Forgue. The drugs are now in possession of the Rhode Island Department of Corrections.
