Chairman of the House Finance Committee Representative Helio Melo says Rhode Islanders will be happy with the General Assemblys proposed state budget for fiscal year 2013.
Overall I think Rhode Islanders will be happy with the budget that is coming out, Melo told the WPRO Morning News with Tara Granahan and Andrew Gobeil with Matt Allen filling in for Andrew. Melo said the new budget will contain no significant new taxes and that the governors meal tax proposal, which proved to be the most controversial new tax suggestion, has been removed.
The Governor has proposed quite a few tax revenues, one of the things that we are seriously looking at is the clothing tax, that would be clothing for anyone item $175 or $200 or more, said Melo. Melo said this measure will bring in an estimated $10 million to the state in revenue.
Melo said that the Governors plan for municipal pensions has also been removed from the budget and will be voted on as a separate bill by the House.
The House Finance Committee will meet tomorrow at the rise of the house to discuss the new budget.
