Preservationists applaud saving Weybosset St. facade

The unusual brick facade of a downtown Providence building that was spared from the wrecking ball is uncovered in a ceremony on Thursday, to the applause of preservationists.
The curved front of the former Providence National Bank building at Weybosset Street was uncovered after several years which saw it covered over by steel framing. The rest of the building was torn down in 2005 to make way for a planned condominium tower that did not materialize, following the economic slump.
"We're here to celebrate what we've achieved," said Lucie Searle, President of the Providence Preservation Society.
"We're here today to celebrate the partnership that has brought about the dismantling of the steel, which has covered the facade," Searle said.
"It's good for economic development, it's good to attract people, and it gives us the soul of our city," said Mayor Angel Taveras.
