Republican Congressional candidate Brendan Doherty is wasting no time in proving he has Democratic support. The campaign announced on Monday a new group they are coining “Democrats for Doherty,” that includes several former mayors and state representatives.

The coalition will kick off at a fundraiser headlined by former Democratic Mayor of Boston Ray Flynn On Thursday June14. Flynn served as Vatican ambassador to the U.S. under President Bill Clinton.

Other Democrats for Doherty will attend the event, including former state representative Joanne Giannini. “We formed this group because we all believe in the work Brendan has done in the state of Rhode Island. We all believe he is a tireless worker and his commitment to public service is strong and we all believe he would be a great congressman,” said Giannini. “We believe that he desires to do what it is right for the people of Rhode Island.” She noted that Doherty’s leadership transcends party lines.

Other Democrats on the committee include former Woonsocket Mayor Charles Baldelli, Former Cumberland Mayor Rick Alger, former Mayor of East Providence Rolland Grant, Former Mayor of Central falls Richard Bessette, former Cumberland Councilwoman Bonnie Large, Former Cumberland Councilman Tony Nobrega, and former RI State Representative Rene Lafayette.
