A three-alarm fire caused extensive damage to two, wood-frame homes in the densely populated Federal Hill section of Providence Friday afternoon.
No injuries were reported, but additional manpower was called in and firefighters were checked by medics because of the extensive heat, temperatures were in the 90's during the noon-time blaze.
Flames leaped from one, four-story home at 20 Spencer Street to the adjacent, three-story building at 18 Spencer, according to witnesses.
"Both houses were heavily involved," when firefighters arrived, said Deputy Assistant Fire Chief James Mirza. "We were trying to keep it to those houses initially, then work on getting it under control, so we were concerned that it could have spread to other houses."
