Christopher Hurd the President of Hurd Auto Mall held a ceremony in Johnston on Tuesday morning to break ground on a new “Hurd Auto Mall” facility.

Hurd said all the companies employed in the project are Rhode Island based. “We got two major projects just started today, that we are undergoing which are going to be an excess of $4 million pumped in directly to the Rhode Island economy.  All Rhode Island contractors, all Rhode Island subcontractors, we got a Rhode Island architect, a Rhode Island engineer. I’m proud to say the money is going to stay in our state and I just thought it very, very important to have some positive economic news thrown out there.”

The project will add 15 permanent jobs at the facility and create over 100 construction jobs. Hurd said the company is adding a whole new department called the relationship development center which will maintain relations with the customer after the transaction is made.

Charles Fogarty, Director of the State Department of Labor and Training attended the groundbreaking and said this is a $4 million shot in the arm for RI. “This is a vote of confidence by the Hurd family and the business community in Rhode Island’s future. We have some tough times but with positive examples like this we are going to get through it.

This facility will house Hurd Chevrolet and Hurd Buick GMC. Hurd is the largest General Motors dealership in New England.
