Several thousand National Grid customers were without power late Wednesday afternoon and into the evening, after a line of heavy thunderstorms ripped through Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.
A spokesman for National Grid reported about 18,000 customers without power, adding, it could take until evening to bring those homes and businesses back on line.
There were reports of downed trees and power lines, hail the size of a quarter to as large as golf balls, and some scattered street flooding. The sky turned nearly as dark as night as the powerful storm overspread the area.
Temperatures dropped from the mid 90's to the mid 70's as the storm rolled through the area.
