"Patriots on way to London"

Couple random thoughts on this week's game.

I am fired up for the Patriots trip to London. I know the Giants were in London in 2007 but the rain ruined that game. The field was awful and the weather became the story. Last year the Saints and Chargers lived up to hype with total of 69 points and the game came down to the end. This time the Patriots and Bucs head to Wembley Stadium and as a big sports fan I am fired up now that it is my team on it's way to England. Wembley gets crazy for futbol and that place is going to be crazy for american football too. 90,000 plus people will create an environment that should be fun to watch. I still don't know who the London crowd is going to root for, I imagine it will favor the Patriots but as my boss Pauly G pointed out to me today it is going to be weird to see people from England root for the "patriots". Somewhat comical really when you think about it.

Either way I like the trip to England to tap into a huge sports town in London and have them be a part of the NFL. (Although the name of the league doesn't fit this week, NFL National Football League when you are crossing the pond you are now the IFL International Football League). I am looking forward to the game and just hope it doesn't rain in London so we don't get another unplayable field at Wembley. Then I think people will see why the NFL is going there in the first place. The NFL committed to 4 years in 2007 so there is one more game committed to next year. I think it should be renewed and London should be a stop every year for 1 game.

"Week 6"

Worked out some technical problems with a few posts that apparently never made it to the page so we are back on track.

Patriots blowing out the Titans in the snow really says way more about the Titans than it does the Patriots. New England looked good don't get me wrong and Tom Brady was throwing TD's all over the place in the 2nd Quarter but Tennessee is a really bad football team right now. I can't remember the last time I saw a team give up this early in the season in the NFL. The Titans effort was called into question after the game by the media asking Coach Fisher and he defended his team saying they didn't quit. I believe when Tennessee goes over the film of this game today effort won't be seen too often. So Patriots fans can feel good this week and take the win but this game doesn't mean the Patriots are as good as this game made them look. This game does however pretty much end the coaching tenor of Jeff Fisher. It is absolutely time for a change in Tennessee and I think it is a matter of when not if they fire Fisher.

One side note real quick on Jeff Fisher. I have seen a few Titans games this year and another reason I think he should be fired is the fact he has blatantly ignored the Wildcat phase going on around him. Everybody has some form of the Wildcat offense going in the NFL. Jeff Fisher has Vince Young as his backup QB and Vince just sits there every week and doesn't do anything. If you are Fisher you have to use Vince Young in the Wildcat. Send Vince in motion, line him up at the slot, put him behind center. Think about the fact that one of the most talented athletes on the team isn't making the field? At all. And you are 0-6. Why hasn't Fisher been questioned about not using Vince in the wildcat? If Mike Vick wasn't being used in the wildcat you can bet people would wonder why. I am sorry but I think that the coach should have found a way to get the football in Vince Young's hands. Ultimately will cost him his job.

Back to the Patriots....the defense of the Patriots is looking better and better each week. Butler is fun to watch and he will get better and suddenly I love the Patriots secondary. Brandon Merriweather is much better than he gets credit for nationally and around here I feel like Patriot's nation doesn't even appreciate him the way they should. Top Safety in the league. Overall at this point in the season I am very impressed with the defense.

"Week 3 Win over Atlanta"

Patriots get past Atlanta pretty easily this week. There was never a point in 2nd half when I felt the game was in doubt. That means they pretty much handled anything Atlanta could bring. Pats dominated the second half of the game thanks to Fred Taylor. Taylor was the best Patriot on the field on offense and he was running with a little burst through the line. I am not sure how long that lasts but if he hits the hole like that and stays healthy the Patriots will cut Maroney sooner than you think. Laurence Maroney while we are on him could be the biggest bust this team has had in a long time. Maroney is a first round draft pick and on the verge of being a huge bust. There is not a more frustrating player on the Patriots than Laurence Maroney. The last thing that stood out this week against the Falcons is the offensive line of the Patriots had their best game. After getting embarrassed by the Jets and punched in the mouth by the Bills that unit came back and had easily the best game of the season.

At the end of 3 weeks the Patriots haven't played that great in either game. Brady looks off, Moss is banged up, Welker hasn't played in 2 of the games, Mayo was lost in the 1st game, the defense has guys rotating to other positions all over the place and they are 2-1. (Worth repeating they are 2-1) Welker, Moss and even Mayo are going to get healthy and the rust is almost off Brady. I think any doubt about their offense is foolish and the concerns lie in the defense.

One thing that I have to note about the tv coverage this week was when Tom Brady was frustrated at halftime and the camera shots and the slow motion shots showing Brady freaking out was pretty funny. FOX wanted there to be something important about what they were showing. There wasn't. Fact is that is what every NFL sideline looks like on Sundays and Mondays. Was I supposed to be reading into what he was yelling about and what Belichick was saying to him? I could care less.

Watching the games Sunday it is uncanny how many plays you can watch of other games without missing a play of the patriots game going back and forth. It really is a talent of which I am a hall of famer. Got to see some of the Jets game. While I am seeing pretty much what I expected from the Jets so far I think everyone is going a little overboard on Mark Sanchez. The guy is good but will struggle at times this year and cost them some games.

"Week 1 Buffalo"

First game is in the books and the Pats came away victorious. It wasn't the way anyone envisioned the first game. Buffalo hung tough for a while but the Patriots kept them in this game. Until the end Buffalo had 7 from the defense on a fluke pick that Brady threw right to Schobel that sure kept the Bills closer than they should have been. A missed field goal by Gostowski which won't happen often and the Bills were even closer than they should have been. Buffalo gets credit for playing good in this game against the Patriots but I think Buffalo has some problems this year and Trent Edwards is going to lose some games for them. He just is. Couple quick things from week 1.

*Pats lose Mayo early in the game and everyone had the "here we go again" feeling. admit it. In fact it may still be there now that you read Mayo on the computer screen. Word is Mayo did hurt the knee and won't be put on Injured Reserve. That is good news but he is certainly missing some games for sure.

*Fast forward to the end of the game. Sure sack by Adalius Thomas but instead he somehow loses his mind and body slams the QB. He gets a 15 yard penalty changing field position, giving first down and changing momentum. It was a good call by the rules and it is called every time. Adalius Thomas surely knows he can't do this and on top of that the league sends officials to every team's camp in August and Thomas heard from them first hand that the quarterback will be protected. If we know as fans that this league protects the QB at all costs of course the players know this. Unacceptable play from a guy who is supposed to be one of the leaders on this team now. Horrible penalty that could have cost them the game and should have if it weren't for a stupid play on a kick return. What a different day in Foxboro today for Thomas this would have been if they lost.

*Leodis Mckelvin. Send him a fan letter today. Mckelvin helps Pats win the game by taking a sure thing touchback out of the endzone with no blockers and everyone in the stadium in shock. Make no mistake about it what caused this play was Brandon Meriweather. The guy hits everything that moves when he plays football and he popped Mckelvin that cause the ball to be stripped by a teammate. Meriweather had at least 3 other big hits in the game. The guy is awesome and was all over the field last night.

"2009 Season Predictions"

Have to get some predictions in before the season right? I agree.

NFC EAST: probably the absolute toughtest division in football. I am going with the Eagles to win this division. I just think they have made some nice additions and will be tough. Giants take 2nd but a wildcard.

NFC Central: has to be the Packers winning the division and Aaron Rogers will officially break out as one of the top quarterbacks in the league. I like the Vikings for 2nd. Adrian Peterson best player in the division has to take you to 2nd place in division.

NFC West: This is going to be a great battle to watch. I like the 49ers to take huge leap forward this year and win the division. That's right I said it. Arizona is 2nd

NFC South: Another division up for grabs. I like Atlanta to be the best overall team and take division. Tough to pick 2nd but I will take Carolina for 2nd.

Playoff teams from NFC:  Eagles, Packers, 49ers, Atlanta, Giants (wildcard) and Vikings (wildcard).

AFC South: The best division in the conference. I have another shocker pick. Houston will win the division. Their offense is potent and the defense will be much improved. Both wildcards could come from this division but I will take Tennessee 2nd.

AFC West: Josh Mcdaniels from Patriots first year with Denver. Don't like the trade of Cutler or the other best player Brandon Marshall also on the outs with coach. I don't think Mcdaniels has the clout to disrupt most talented players on the team this early. I will take San Diego as division winner in runaway. The Chiefs finish 2nd in a shocker.

AFC North: Don't think Pittsburgh will hold up. I like Cincinnatti to claim division with Ochocinco having a monster year. I like Pittsburgh 2nd. Also Brady Quinn era officially begins in Cleveland they will be tougher later in the season.

AFC EAST: I will take the Patriots. Homer pick maybe but Tom Brady is going to dismantle this league. I see 2007 numbers for Brady and Moss. The Jets take 2nd and I think they will have by far the best defense in the division.

"Seymour Trade"

Wow. Just typing that title is still shocking. Of course I expected them to trade his rights AFTER THE SEASON or that he would leave via free agency AFTER THE SEASON. Bill Belichick doesn't always go the most expected route and this trade over the labor day weekend was not expected by anyone that I know of locally or nationally. Not many people were throwing out a trade of Seymour before this week and if they did it would have been dismissed so fast. Trade Seymour? Now?!? That would have been the reaction in hypothetical terms. Now the trade really happened and you can't find many people around here who aren't making excuses for Belichick and checking off to him immediately. Everyone is drunk on the Belichick kool-aid in this fan base. I thankfully don't even know the color of the kool-aid let alone drink it. I get that Belichick is a genius coach but this move doesn't make sense to me. I am not looking ahead until 2011 and I am not waiting to see who they get with this 1st round draft pick from Oakland. This trade was done 8 days before the season which means it has to also be judged on what it does to THIS YEAR'S team. I don't know how you can honestly tell me this trade of Seymour makes the Patriots of 2009 a better team. The fact is that this trade, made 8 days before the season starts, hurts this year's team. All I hear around here with my conversations with people is that Seymour wasn't that good anymore, he is getting old, he was leaving anyway, they have younger options. I don't want to hear it. Seymour is a 5 time Pro Bowler, led the team in sacks last year and commanded a double team when he was on the field last year. The guy can still play at a high level and the point is the guy who fills in for him isn't as good. Period. Patriots already had question marks in the secondary and some at linebacker. Nobody questioned any part of the Defensive Line. Today it has questions. The defense is weaker in 2009 and we will see how this works out. This trade has a major impact on the 2009 Patriots and I for one don't like it due to the timing of it and the immediate negative impact to your team THIS YEAR. Most of you will disagree and wonder how I could even think about questioning Belichick but on this move I do question him. Let's see how it plays out this year but I am on record as not liking it.

"Teddy Bruuuuuuuuschi retires 9-3"

So this is the first entry in my Patriot's blog. I am looking forward to posting on this blog throughout the NFL season. I will be focusing in on the Patriots but also the NFL as a whole. I have the NFL Sunday Ticket so for sure something will happen on Sundays outside the Patriots that will make it's way on this blog. Just setting an honest expectation. So lets get right into it.

Teddy Bruschi retired from football early in the week. As I was watching the press conference live and watching Bill Belichick get emotional talking about Teddy I found myself in disbelief. It was surreal watching Bill get emotional. I was expecting him to wipe his eyes and look down at his fingers and say "what is this salty discharge from my eyes"? So now we know Bill is a human. But Teddy was the story. I was and still am very happy for Teddy. This was not a sad day for Patriots fans it was an end of an era. Bruschi won the hearts of Pats fans over almost immediately upon his arrival after being 3rd round draft pick. The Bruuuuuuuuuschi chants were a staple of the Patriot's home games for the last decade. While Tom Brady is the face of the franchise today you could make a case for Bruschi being the face of the team prior to passing the torch over to Tom in the past 3 years or so. Not seeing #54 will be different for all of us but we will get over it because Teddy as any honest Patriot fan will tell you had seen his best days and it was time for the natural progession to a new group of linebackers for this defense. Teddy had a great career. He won 3 superbowls, made over 1000 tackles, played 13 seasons and played for 1 team throughout his career. If you asked him in 1996 to sign on to a career with those highlights he would have taken it in a second as would anybody coming into the league right now. So while Teddy is gone the memories he provided remain strong in our minds and I say good for him. He left on his terms and that is rare today in sports.

One last thing on Teddy. Every once in a while a player comes along that you just know is going into coaching. I don't expect him to do that this year but I expect in the very near future for Bruschi to become a linebacker coach in this league maybe even for the Patriots. I remember feeling this way when Pepper Johnson retired and sure enough he became a coach right away. Bruschi would be a great football coach and a great addition to the Patriot's staff.
